Frequently Asked Questions

Does my audio leave my device?

Basil never receives your audio. By default, Basil AI makes transcripts and summaries on your device with Apple's speech frameworks and the Neural Engine, and Basil has no server. iCloud Sync is on by default: it stores your recordings, transcripts and summaries in your own iCloud account, so your other devices can use them. Turn it off any time in Settings › iCloud.

Do you use my data to train AI models?

No. Basil never receives your recordings or transcripts, so we cannot see or use them for any purpose, including AI training. AI processing runs on your device. If iCloud Sync is on, your library also syncs through your own iCloud account.

How does Basil handle HIPAA and GDPR?

Basil processes your recordings, transcripts and summaries on your device and never sends them to Basil, so Basil never receives your data at all. If iCloud Sync is on, they sync through your own iCloud account with Apple. For HIPAA, Basil never receives your protected health information (PHI), so there is nothing for Basil to cover under a business associate agreement (BAA). Apple's iCloud terms do not allow HIPAA covered entities or business associates to store PHI in iCloud. If you work with PHI, turn iCloud Sync off in Basil's Settings. For GDPR it means Basil holds none of your content, and you can export or delete everything at any time. Compliance itself is assessed against how your organisation operates, so we describe what the architecture does rather than certify an outcome. We sign DPAs and NDAs on request.

Can I upload audio or video files for transcription and summaries?

Yes. Basil AI can process uploaded audio files and common DRM-free video files entirely on-device. For videos, Basil extracts the audio locally, discards the copied video, and keeps only the extracted audio in your recording library.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Since all processing happens on-device, Basil works without an internet connection. You can record, transcribe, and summarize meetings anywhere—on a plane, in a basement, or in a secure facility with no Wi-Fi.

Basil AI is a universal app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. One subscription unlocks all devices. We also offer a free browser-based transcription tool at basilai.app/app/ for quick web-based recording.
