Live transcription uses Whisper, an open-source speech model, running in your browser with WebAssembly. The first visit downloads the model files (about 150 MB for English) from Hugging Face; your browser then keeps them. Your audio is not uploaded. Text appears a few seconds after each pause. When you stop, Basil compares voices across the whole recording and labels each speaker, the same two-step approach the Basil app for iPhone, iPad and Mac uses.

Local AI Meeting Summaries

Our system uses WebGPU-accelerated AI models (Qwen2.5-0.5B) to generate intelligent meeting summaries directly in your browser. The AI summarization engine analyzes your transcribed meeting notes and creates concise summaries with key points, action items, and insights - all processed locally on your device.

What runs locally, and what does not

Transcription and summaries run in your browser. The page downloads model files and code (from Hugging Face and the jsDelivr CDN), but it does not upload your audio or your transcript. The page counts anonymous usage events with Google Analytics, such as "recording started"; these never contain audio or text.

No Meeting Data Collection

We don't collect, store, or analyze your meeting transcriptions — nothing is sent to Basil. Your audio, transcripts and AI summaries stay in your browser. There are no user accounts required. Your private meeting notes and confidential transcripts are yours alone and remain on your device. This makes our tool ideal for sensitive use cases like:

The Basil app transcribes entirely on-device, so nothing is uploaded at all — which is why there is no processor to appoint and no business associate agreement to sign.

Performance notes: AI summarization uses your device's GPU via WebGPU. Performance depends on your hardware. On older devices, summaries may take longer to generate.

Recording duration: Browser-based recording is best for sessions under 2 hours. For longer recordings (up to 8 hours), use the native iOS/Mac app which offers superior battery efficiency and reliability.

Offline use: The web transcriber requires an initial internet connection to load. For fully offline recording and transcription, download the Basil AI native app.
